Image: Atmospheric Sciences alumna, Emily Wilson, was recently recognized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the "critical support [she] provided to Operation Allies Welcome", an initiative set forth by the DHS to evacuate U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals during the insurrection in Afghanistan. On August 29, 2021, the President of the United States directed the DHS to lead and coordinate ongoing efforts across the federal government to support vulnerable Afghans, including those who worked alongside American troops in Afghanistan for the past two decades, as they safely resettle in the United States. Wilson, Senior Meteorologist for Delta Air Lines, was recognized in October of last year for her contribution to Operation Allies Welcome. While she is humbled to receive the recognition, she states that she is "just happy to be doing [her] job, and to be representing UGA while doing so." On behalf of the department, we couldn't be more proud of Emily for her work, and we look forward to hearing more of her successes to come!
