From Department Head Thomas Mote

Welcome to the spring 2014 installment of the geography Department e-newsletter. We welcome your feedback and reviews on this electronic newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading about the events and accolades in the department over the past year. We are particularly proud of all of the impressive honors from our undergraduate and graduate students!

We have a new addition to our department in the fall. Suzanne Pilaar Birch (Cambridge 2012), who is a postdoctoral scientist at the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University, will join the department as an assistant professor in the fall. Suzie will hold a joint position with the department of anthropology.

Last month, we saw our IT professional, Dylan Tracy, move up the hill to North Campus with a longer job title and more responsibility. We wish him the best of luck in his new position! Xiaonan Xie has accepted the position as his replacement and will begin working in Geography this summer. Xiaonan has been working with a private gaming company and was previously on staff at SUNY-Buffalo.

Thank you for taking time to catch up on what is going on in Athens and geography. We want to be able to reach out to as many of you as possible, and we hope you enjoy learning about the success and achievements of our faculty and students. Please know that we would enjoy having you visit the department if you are back on campus.
