I am often amazed at the Earth. It is such an amazing planet. All aspects of weather fascinate me, and my sheer awe of it defined my career pathway early on. When I see something extraordinary, it captures my attention even more.

A post by my colleague Dr. Paul Newman, a noted atmospheric chemist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, caught my eye. It was a NASA satellite image of sulfur dioxide being emitted by Mt. Kilauea.

I am a scientist that has spent much of my career studying precipitating systems. I was also the Deputy Project Scientist for NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission for many years. Big rainfall events get my attention.
