Dedication to Elaine Collier Neal

The spring 2015 edition of the geography newsletter is dedicated to a special alumna: Mrs. Elaine Collier Neal (M.A. 1969 Geography), whose gifts in a single year have impacted the department in profound and on-going ways. In the past year:

  • Elaine initiated, and largely funded, the restoration of the iconic geophysical globe on the second floor of the Geography-Geology Building.
  • She provided a magnanimous gift to support events in honor of her mentor Louis De Vorsey in conjunction with the SEDAAG conference. Her gift brought a renowned scholar to deliver the keynote address that opened the conference. It also provided festive hospitality for all attendees and guests at the UGA Special Collections Library.
  • Elaine also established a permanent endowment to commemorate Dr. De Vorsey, in perpetuity. The Louis De Vorsey endowment will generate funding on an annual basis to offer research and career-building opportunities to our students and faculty.

As you read details about the SEDAAG meeting and the restoration of the globe, I hope you will join me in saying “thank you” to Elaine. Her generosity is deeply appreciated and truly inspiring.
